Below is the guardian Wolf of Sertoma Art Center. It is one of the 100 placed around Raleigh in 2001. Here is a little background:
The Raleigh Red Wolf Ramble exhibit began September 2001. The form for each wolf was made of fiberglass. NC artists enhanced them with paint and three dimensional add ons. Once the whimsical wolves were completed, The City Council approved the placement of 100 red wolves sculptures all around Raleigh for viewing. We had maps of where each was located. What fun it was to wonder about looking for them. On April 5, 2002 they were auctioned. They are now scattered all over the State. The red wolf was selected because it is an endangered species special to NC. At the time the newspaper coverage of the auction stated, 'of the 125 wolves in the wild, about 100 are in North Carolina'.

Those are nice sculptures.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore wolves! As a Wolfpack fan, it would have been an excellent conversation starter if you had displayed one your front yard! Woohoo! 🐺

ReplyDeleteI do like these fibreglass animals that pop up all over the place - and the artworks are always worth a look! YAM xx
I've watched documentaries on the Red Wolves before. I guess we should be grateful that there are any left at all because 100 is not very many. Fun thing about your statues is that we have several cities here in Ohio that have done the same thing. One town has concrete horses that are decorated, and one town has the bird which is the Cardinal decorated
ReplyDeleteNow you have a reason to travel more in your state to find some more of them. Great idea to raise some money. We love finding things like this as you know.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice sculpture. The did something similar around here. I think it was fish though and then they were all auctioned off.
ReplyDeleteNeat. At one time Downtown Jackson had a series of decorated catfish.
ReplyDeleteVenice did something like that but we had dolphin and mermaids. I think it would have been a fun thing to look for the wolves. Good Morning!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool looking wolf. It's too bad to hear there are so few left in the wild. We had the same thing but with fiberglass horses around here about as long ago. There aren't many of the horses left to see these days.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Wolf sculpture is very pretty!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I would love to see this in person and with you.
