Secret Lives of S,T and MyMe

November Reader's Digest and I happened upon this article,
"The Secret Lives of Letters", by Brooke Nelson.  Mr. Nelson says letters may be small characters, but there are amazing stories behind all 26 alphabet all-stars.

I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your blogs. Often your post put
pictures/memories in "My Mind's Eye" which in turns give me a blog post.
As you know, I'm still working on my own voice here.

Every so often I'll post about things from
My Mind's Eye aka MyMe

Here is my first MyMe
Last Saturday Cleo...one of Angel Madi's kitty friends posted about moving to Wilmington.
My mind's eye immediately wander back to the late 1950's when my paternal Grandmother
had a boarding house/what we now call a Bed and Breakfast on Wrightsville Beach...about 10 miles from Wilmington.
I was the only girl and oldest of 4 grandchildren.
During the summers, cousins and I would spend time with Grandmother.  She lived on the bottom floor of the house and rented out rooms for a few days to several weeks at a time.  If memory serves
me correctly she cooked breakfast and supper for her guests.
The immediate memory I have when I read Cleo's post was about youngest cousin.
No matter how much we all practiced with him, he could not pronounce Wilmington.
It always came out

Wil-toe-ming.

The second MyMe
Fast forward to early 1960's, my parents and I went to Wilmington to visit Grandmother.
I was going to stay for 2 weeks that visit.  When it was time for me to come home, I was going to ride home with Uncle Pete. At the time he had a VW Bug, there was NO I 40 East
the trip to/from Wilmington took 3+ hours bumping along two lane roads.  The VW was so low to the ground every bump felt like my tush was rubbing on the black top. AND the VW had
no air conditioning.
Finally we get close to home when Uncle Pete turns onto a different road.
I politely told him (he was OLD...in his 40's) that he took the wrong turn!!
He turns to me and smiles.  Nope he said while you were with Grandmother your
parents bought and moved into a new house.  That is where I'm taking you.
Lo and behold not only had the moved but they had my room all set up.
Life was so uncomplicated back then.  You could buy a home and move in 2 weeks time.

  1. we know why they called this car a bug... the mama had one once many moons ago it was as fast as a lightning, therefore his name was "the purple snail" LOL

Such are the memories that light up our present! I could feel that 'bug' trip with you - an aunt of ours had one for a few years and it was quite the adventure. Mind you - that may have had something to do with her driving style too... YAM xx

  4. I love the last one the best. Your parents moved in two weeks. That's awesome. It was so much simpler then. Made me smile. Okay, that and your uncle was old and he was in his 40s. That's mighty young to us now.

Have a fabulous day, my friend. Big hug. ♥

  5. That would be quite a surprise to come home to a new house and a new room already set up! I have had 4 VW Bugs and learned to drive a stick on the first one. It was turquoise and my best gal pal taught me to shift. How fun for you to spend those summers with your Grandmother. And as to it being an uncomplicated time, I would love for it to be like that again. Interesting about the T-shirt! Thanks for your memories this morning and the ones that popped up for me!

  10. Loved your MeMy stories, Miss Cecilia, and the fact that when you're 40 - you're old! When mom graduated 6th grade, the family moved from MD to LA and she was to spend the summer in CT with the grandparents while the move took place. She was in CT for 2 months and when her stay came to an end, she went home to a brand new home in LA, so your stories are similar☺

  11. The way things were done in the olden days, amazes me! They moved while you were away! Seems a bit traumatic, doesn't it? The Hubby's mother died, and they didn't allow him to go to the funeral, or be involved much. He always thought that he'd done something wrong, and that's why she died and he was ignored! Crazy stuff!

  12. What great memories -- and you are right -- things were a lot simpler back then!

  13. Our family home was bought and moved into, while I was being born. Mothers stayed longer in hospital after the birth. One of my sister's still lives there.

  14. I always enjoy hearing your MyMe-s...How fun it must have been to come home to a brand new room!

  15. what great stories C; I especially like the last; nowadays it takes two weeks to get someone on the phone to inquire if a moving van is available for rent ~ ☺☺ ♥
    { whatever happened to the B & B...do you know ? } ☺☺♥♥

  16. Those are some great MyMe stories. We bet that bumpy ride in the VW was well worth it to find yourself in your new home.

  17. What a great story and surprise to go back to a new house! I assume a VW Bug is the same as what we call a VW Beetle. The most uncomfortable car I have ever ridden in!

  18. We loved reading your stories. Those Bugs sure weren't any type of luxury vehicle. That must have been a bit of a shock to find you had a new home after your trip to Grandma's.

  19. Awesome memories! I should think about my past more - but I can't get around the hole left by my grandfather and favorite aunt who died within a year of each other when I was in early elementary school. The before was beautiful ... the after ... not so much.

  20. What great memories! I can still remember visiting my nana in Mineral Wells, TX. and can picture her house perfectly in my mind. Isn't that the best? Wow, I can't believe your parents moved while you were gone. That is the set-up to a great joke!

  21. We love your memories. Mom's first car was a VW bug. Never thought why a t-shirt is called a t-shirt and now we know!

  22. I thought the word t-shirt had been around longer, that was interesting. Noce stories too.

  23. T-shirt makes far more sense the. The white beater . . . . .

  24. That type of moving thing happened to me once with an office, and even for that small of a move, I was so grateful. I rode in one 1960's VW bug and I hated it. It was the roughest riding car I have ever been in. You are doing very well finding your voice. :)

  25. Great alphabet stories AND your MyMe tales were both wonderful. How exciting that your Uncle Pete took you home but to a NEW home with your room all set up and ready for you. What a great surprise! You're right - life used to be pretty uncomplicated but not now that's for sure!

    Hugs, Pam
