Do you have a favorite song?
A song that you never get tired of hearing & always touches your soul?
Mom’s favorite is Wichita Lineman by Glenn Campbell.
Jimmy Webb wrote "Wichita Lineman" in response to Campbell's urgent phone request for a "place"-based or "geographical" song to follow up "By the Time I Get to
Phoenix".
His lyrical inspiration came while driving through the high plains of the Oklahoma panhandle past a long line of telephone poles, on one of which perched a lineman speaking into his handset. Webb "put himself atop that pole" with the phone in his hand as he imagined the lineman talking to his girlfriend. Despite its real-life roots lying elsewhere, Webb set his song in Wichita, Kansas.
Campbell, who was born in Oklahoma, said, "When I heard it I cried because I was homesick."
In 2021, Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" ranked "Wichita Lineman" at number 206. Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan considered it "the greatest song ever written".
Best lyrics ever: “And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time.”
Please tell us your favorite song, and we’ll try to feature it on a future post!
Enjoy!

Rocky is a beautiful cat 🐈 My favourite song 🎵 by Glen Campbell is Try Little Kindness.
ReplyDeletethat is a wonderful song... thanks dear rocky...
ReplyDeleteHmmm, not being a fan of this type of music, I really don't have any opinion! But if you love them then they must be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI am into classical music, mostly from about 1600-1850 with some exceptions. And within this genre I DO have lots that move me, and some make me want to call my family, because they seem to be telling me there is something I need to know about. Weird but true.
By the way, the afghan/lap robe you made si beautiful! I love the way you stitched it together.
That is a lovely song and interesting to hear what inspired it. I like all of Glen Campbell's songs, even though that is not usually my genre of music. Having said that, I like different songs/music from all genres. I enjoy the songs from the more modern musicals too like Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables etc.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, my mother had a Glenn Campbell album. I used to love the song Galveston on there and would play it over and over.

ReplyDeleteThat was an excellent post, Rocky... Glenn Campbell was one of my parent's faves. I grew up to the sounds of him, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones... never really my bag. I'm another who prefers, on the whole, classical music. That said, I do have an eclectic ear and quite enjoy heavy metal and rock. Interestingly, one song that immediately sprang to mind, though, is an 80s pop item... The Eurythmics: Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This. It spoke to my wanderlust! YAM xx
Rocky, Lynn's favorite singer of all times is Glen campbell. She has a CD of his Greatest Hits and she used to listen to it all the time when she drove back and forth to the grocery. But the new van does not play cds, therefore she cannot listen to it because she is PC illiterate and knows nothing about iPods and all that stuff. I'm so glad you had something to share with us today that we have in common. Precious
