Happy Tuesday: Musical Facts with Rocky

We thank our Hostess Sandee at Comedy Plus

Do you have a favorite song?
A song that you never get tired of hearing & always touches your soul?
Mom’s favorite is Wichita Lineman by Glenn Campbell.

Jimmy Webb wrote "Wichita Lineman" in response to Campbell's urgent phone request for a "place"-based or "geographical" song to follow up "By the Time I Get to
Phoenix".

His lyrical inspiration came while driving through the high plains of the Oklahoma panhandle past a long line of telephone poleson one of which perched a lineman speaking into his handset. Webb "put himself atop that pole" with the phone in his hand as he imagined the lineman talking to his girlfriend. Despite its real-life roots lying elsewhere, Webb set his song in Wichita, Kansas.

Campbell, who was born in Oklahoma, said, "When I heard it I cried because I was homesick."

In 2021, Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" ranked "Wichita Lineman" at number 206. Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan considered it "the greatest song ever written".

Best lyrics ever: “And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time.”

Please tell us your favorite song, and we’ll try to feature it on a future post!

Enjoy!

  3. Hmmm, not being a fan of this type of music, I really don't have any opinion! But if you love them then they must be wonderful!
I am into classical music, mostly from about 1600-1850 with some exceptions. And within this genre I DO have lots that move me, and some make me want to call my family, because they seem to be telling me there is something I need to know about. Weird but true.

By the way, the afghan/lap robe you made si beautiful! I love the way you stitched it together.

  4. That is a lovely song and interesting to hear what inspired it. I like all of Glen Campbell's songs, even though that is not usually my genre of music. Having said that, I like different songs/music from all genres. I enjoy the songs from the more modern musicals too like Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables etc.

  5. When I was a kid, my mother had a Glenn Campbell album. I used to love the song Galveston on there and would play it over and over.

That was an excellent post, Rocky... Glenn Campbell was one of my parent's faves. I grew up to the sounds of him, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones... never really my bag. I'm another who prefers, on the whole, classical music. That said, I do have an eclectic ear and quite enjoy heavy metal and rock. Interestingly, one song that immediately sprang to mind, though, is an 80s pop item... The Eurythmics: Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This. It spoke to my wanderlust! YAM xx

  7. Rocky, Lynn's favorite singer of all times is Glen campbell. She has a CD of his Greatest Hits and she used to listen to it all the time when she drove back and forth to the grocery. But the new van does not play cds, therefore she cannot listen to it because she is PC illiterate and knows nothing about iPods and all that stuff. I'm so glad you had something to share with us today that we have in common. Precious

  8. Glen Campbell is my favorite singer and guitar player. Glen's guitar solos and riffs are amazing. If you haven't listened/watched his concert with the South Dakota Symphony on YouTube you are in for a treat. In Concert in Sioux Falls (2001). His "Amazing Guitar Solos" also on YouTube. I have so many favorite songs covering many genres of music but Wichita Lineman is right up there at the top. One of my other favorite songs is Lovely Day performed by Bill Withers. It's my ringtone on my phone even though nobody calls anymore, it's all texting. Sad, I like to hear a voice. Thank you for this post today Rocky! Sorry, but I could go on forever about Glen Campbell. Oh, and Jimmy Webb's song performed by Glen, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. Promise... I am done.

  10. Louis Armstrong singing IT'S A WONDERFUL WORLD tops my list and a close second is HALLELUJAH by Leonard Cohen (all of Elvis, always ...).

  11. That's a great song. My mom is partial to any John Denver song...especially Country Roads. That song has been adopted by my mom's alma mater (West Virginia University) and all the sports teams sing it with the crowd after every game. When she was in college they opened a new football stadium and John Denver came and sang that song.

  14. My mom mostly listens to classical music but on Saturdays, when they have talk radio on her favorite station, she listens to artists who sing. She loves Dan Fogelberg and Phil Collins and Neil Diamond and Bruce Springsteen and James Taylor and the list can go on and on.
